We all had been excited about the latest from WordPress: WordPress 5.5. 

But little did we know that among all the latest additions, like lazy loading and auto-updates of themes and plugins, there were so many bugs that it affected millions of Websites negatively.

WordPress made an official statement when a list of affected plugins and themes was released. This list also addresses the specific issues that were in the plugins and themes so that a developer can update its software.

WordPress 5.5.1 maintenance Release

Maintenance Release: WordPress 5.5.1

This latest version is released by WordPress now and it is somewhat of a safety net for crashing websites. As the name suggests, it is for maintenance and not a final product.

This update is released to make sure that developers can make necessary changes in their plugins and themes to make them compatible with WordPress 5.5.

Developers have time till March 2021 to fix the issues, if not done before the next official WordPress releases then they will be responsible for any website crashes.

According to WordPress:

“The plan is to remove this fallback code in two major versions, so this will be deleted in WordPress 5.7. This gives plugin and theme developers ample time to remove the conflicting code and switch to using wp.i18n”

Websites affected Negatively

First, when Websites were showing problems after the update, it was considered as a casual problem that can happen with any update. But as soon as the above list was released and the scale of impact reached millions, it became obvious that the update had some major issues.

Considering that WordPress.org released WordPress 5.5.1: Maintenance Release on 1st September 2020.

Plugins are already updating

The developers started working on their plugins to make them compatible with the new Update and as a result of that, some plugins in the list have been fixed already.

  • Hummingbird – Speed Optimize, Cache, Minify & Defer Critical CSS & JavaScript
  • Content Views – Post Grid & List for WordPress

Themes affected by WordPress 5.5:

  • Astra +1 million users
  • Storefront +200,000 users
  • Hestia +100,000 users
  • Neve +100,000 users

Many other themes were impacted negatively.

Conclusion

The maintenance release has been designed keeping the after-effects of WordPress 5.5 into consideration. So if you have rolled back to the last update, then WordPress 5.5.1 is the update you must do.
