how to edit WordPress Footer

What is a footer in WordPress?

The footer in WordPress refers to the ending part of the website which shows more about other articles and site links added by the person whose content you are reading. It appears on all the website pages.

This area is usually unseen or ignored by most people for a long time. Therefore adding different features in there can make it more interesting. WordPress is majorly known for its themes. The theme page also comes with a footer which is easy to edit. You can do so by selecting the footer.php template file and removing all kinds of unwanted links.

Here are the things you can either add or remove from the footer:

  • A code can be added to a WordPress footer.
  • You can add widgets in the footer.
  • Discard the ‘powered by WordPress’ text from the bottom.

Editing widgets in your footer in WordPress

Footer is available or seen on almost every WordPress theme page. To make it noticeable, you need to add pictures, links to the references, texts, and much more. You can also add disclaimers to the same. Now let’s see how to do so.

Adding a write-up or a picture in the footer is not a difficult task. All you need to do is, go to the Appearance option and then select the widgets option. From there you can add all kinds of content to the footer, be it text or pictures. You can add more widgets to it in the same way.

Sometimes, the theme pages have more than one footer area. Now, it can be a task to make two footers look noticeable. Therefore, in the first one, you can add all the features, texts, and images while in the second one, you can add the description and preview of the site.

As mentioned before, you can add links to the footer as well. You can do that, by going to the Appearance option and selecting menus listed under it. You will see a ‘create new menu’ button in there.

Click it on and enter the user Id to your website. Click on the create button as you finish choosing the name.

Once you have created the menu, you can add your content links, images, posts, etc. a left column will be visible from where you can add all your stuff to the footer. When you are done, just save the whole thing.

The next step here is to create a navigation menu. You again have to go back to the appearance option and select the widget button. You will find them in the admin menu of your WordPress site. Next, select the footer menu from the same from the drop-down menu. Select it and save it. Now go back to your site and check it out.

Editing the footer text manually

Footers in any theme page is important to be noticed. Therefore there is an option of customization as well. All you need to do is edit the footer.php file. It is a WordPress folder that presents the footer area of any theme.

One simple way of doing the same is by taking the help of the FTP client and connecting it with WordPress hosting.

As the first step, you need to download the the/wp-content/themes/yourtheme/footer.php file and then edit it in a text editor. Search for “powered by WordPress” in the text and you will find something like this:

<div class="footer-credits">
    <p class="footer-copyright">&copy;
        echo date_i18n(
            /* translators: Copyright date format, see */
            _x( 'Y', 'copyright date format', 'twentytwenty' )
        <a href="<?php echo esc_url( home_url( '/' ) ); ?>"><?php bloginfo( 'name' ); ?></a>
    </p><!-- .footer-copyright -->
    <p class="powered-by-wordpress">
        <a href="<?php echo esc_url( __( '', 'twentytwenty' ) ); ?>">
            <?php _e( 'Powered by WordPress', 'twentytwenty' ); ?>
    </p><!-- .powered-by-wordpress -->
</div><!-- .footer-credits -->

This is an example of a twenty-twenty theme footer. You can upload the file with a new name in the footer.php file.

Always keep a backup of your PHP file as even if you delete it by mistake, you can have one extra copy of the same.

Adding code to your WordPress footer

WordPress footers may also need a code to make it interesting. This can help you in linking your website to other apps and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. For example- if you want to add a social media platform to your site, you need to copy the transcript of the same and paste it in your footer. You can do this by adding the “insert heading and footers” to your device.
